Auto Workshop
Introduction
Sustainable Innovation’s initial research has confirmed a trend widespread in African, a practical skills learned from experience often casually. Carpenters, mechanics or computer repairs shops are ran by people that hardly went to school. This is an opportunity to harness and make something stable out of, through grassroot start ups Sustainable Innovation can organize a long term job offer to youths that have shown promising skills.
Roadside car repairs in Nigeria are the first choice for most drivers looking to fix anything from common to advanced auto repairs. With ill equipped tools, repairers could deliver immediate solution for most customers. A fully equipped workshop is even more attractive for drivers as they can rely on the speed and quality of repair made to the cars.
In this post Sustainable Innovation will explore some challenges encountered by millions of skillful youths in Nigeria and a basic solution to address it.
Most roadside mechanics are operated by few adults and few boys coming to earn a few bucks after school. The skill is acquired by working with their bosses over months.
Sustainability
Since most people repair have their cars fixed by roadside mechanics, it is reasonable to empower such promising individual by providing a stable system to double their earnings without cutting down from quotas of their competitors. Most cars are imported to Nigeria, having been used from anywhere near few decades already. As such, their maintenance is a key to keep them running especially those used in public transport system.
A mechanic workshop will always be on the rise, a supply that can hardly meet the demand of broken cars in Nigeria’s roads. An equipped mechanic workshop isn’t hard to start, but those to benefit from it will double their earning easily since drivers will prefer to take their cars there, seeing as it is equipped. A workshop is also a business that will be there for decades, with lost maintenance cost.
Sustainable Innovation can therefore offer this golden opportunity using mechanical tools imported through partners in Europe. The cost of importation and start up will be kept low as a result of existing networks.
Funding
The plan for funding one workshop is $15, 000. This includes tools to be imported and locally transported within Nigeria to the operational location. This fundraising campaign is currently ongoing and active! Every is invited to participate by either directly donating or spreading the work on social media / email.
As most of our fundraising activities are awareness created online, the duration it takes to actualize our mechanic workshop depends on how fast the fundraising campaign goes.
With $10, 000 we can already start the workshop, and then look forward to continue with the rest of our campaign.
Opportunities
By investing in this mechanic workshop you are providing a stable means of income for locals that otherwise wouldn’t get employment or earn very little. The mechanic workshop will be ran by locals and is therefore a grassroot initiative operationally. This opportunity is also designed to improve the livelihood of hardworking skillful Nigerians, by recognizing their talents and designing them into something more permanent.
The idea has received great attention in various local communities, even as aging mechanics look forward to a better future in their careers.
Lastly, this opportunity is also for investors and donors to become of part of empowering grassroot initiatives in Africa. It reduces crimes and poverty, while at the same time improves standards of living and quality of car repair given to drivers.
