Bakery

Introduction

Nigeria heavily relies on food import to feed a growing population of over 200 million people. Agricultural industries are relatively few and most farmers practice subsistence farming. Food importation are from across Atlantic Ocean from Brazil, China or India. The result being the cost of food in local markets such as rice harder to regulate. Price deflection are sometimes up by about 30% overnight. Deregulation in food cost creates competition that eliminates low income people from having fair access to products. The monopoly is sadly projected to continue.

In recent years, draught and inflation have combined forces to reduce an already minimal food output while cost for common food almost doubling. Importation is an unsustainable business for the low income. Sustainable Innovation is working to address a portion of the problem through a small and scalable local bakery in Nigeria, to be operated and managed by locals living in the area. 

Wheat and other raw materials required for a small scale bakery are readily available in Nigeria. Food production could go local for a fundamental niche that everyone spends heavily on, baked products.

Sustainability

The need for food consumption is always on the rise. The location for the bakery is strategic with transportation logistic within same zone as sorghum farmers. Next to demand, the supply of unemployed youths is higher. There will always be people willing to work. A bakery is also an opportunity for farmers to scale their production in meeting an increasing customers paying for local delicacy in an industry of their community. 

The bakery will fund its operations from monthly sales profit, making it sustainable. In addition, a competitive sorghum will bring down the cost of production, giving higher profit margin. Workers will be paid form product sales. 

 

Funding

Since this project is a start-up and runs on industrial equipment, it will rely on fundraising campaign to get the tool sets going. The plan is to get a few quality and low maintenance tools. Fundraising is currently ongoing for this project and any amount as donation will be appreciated. 

Although in 2023 we partnered with Sustainable Clean Water to provide a unit of water system for a medium sized town using youths to complete important manual work, a start-up bakery will need relatively lower manpower during the construction and installation phase. Reliance on donation is on the heavy end with our bakery project.

 

Opportunities

By investing in this bakery you are providing a stable means of income for locals that otherwise wouldn’t get employment. Industries are either going out of business or simply not giving employment opportunities. With high corruption rate, most individuals don’t stand a chance for stable means of sustenance without helping hands. By financially empowering Sustainable Innovation, the bakery will give jobs directly to people that really need it, instead of nepotism.
